First Memory Verse for Christmas Eve Service
“And there were in the same country shepherds abiding in their fields keeping watch over their flocks by night.” (Luke 2:8 KJV) I had rehearsed it for weeks to be sure I could recite it perfectly.
I was five years old and it was my first time to be part of the Children’s Service on Christmas Eve. The children told the Christmas Story in verse and song. This was a German Lutheran tradition brought by German immigrants to America. At the end of the service, another tradition was followed. The Elders of the church gave a small brown paper bag filled with hard candy, fruits and nuts to each child. This was to make sure no child was without a gift for Christmas.
Jesus admonished His disciples to encourage the little children to come to Him and not forbid them because this was the Kingdom of God.
