She was the most beautiful woman I had ever seen. Miss Ruby had long dark hair and she wore makeup. I remember the red lipstick and red nail polish. She was kind, she spoke softly and smelled wonderful.
One day, when my braids were very tight, she loosened them for me. Ahh what a relief it was! It’s been almost seven decades since I’ve seen Miss Ruby but I remember her like it was yesterday.
Do you remember your first grade teacher? I wonder if teachers ever realize what an impact they have on their students. If you are a teacher and you’re reading this, please accept my thanks for all the positive words that you speak into the lives of your students. Maybe there are some braids that need loosening in your classroom today.
